Backlight | Project 12 Portraits

This month’s challenge in our Portraits blog circle was backlighting and sunflare. I love shooting backlit, as I’m sure you can tell from scrolling through my blog!  The boys and I were anxious to try a new location out so we took a walk at Aliso and Wood Canyon. We bike this area often and I always think how beautiful it would be to photograph. We had a great time. For more dreamy backlighting goodness, check out the beautiful work of Melissa Deakin, Buffalo, NY Family Photographer.

This is his “I would much rather be looking for bugs than indulging my photographer mom” look.

This one was taken at the end of the evening. It does not qualify as backlit since the sun had gone down, but I love how they are sitting together.

How fun to see your images from that night!!! I looooooove the one of the boys running with the sun flare.

So fun! My favorite is of them running down the road!

Kimberly, your boys are so adorable. What a great location and lighting. I particularly love the last one of them on the bench. I just love the composition of that one. Great post!

Big Bear | Everyday Moments Blog Circle

This was my kids first time visiting the snow! They are 5 and 7 and we have been feeling like bad parents,  I don’t know why we waited so long! We are so lucky to live a couple hours away from the mountains, and this year we finally took advantage of it and spent a weekend in Big Bear. The kids absolutely loved it, they wanted to move into our cabin and live there forever. We played in the snow, went tubing, and visted the zoo. This is definitely going to become a yearly tradition.

This is so beautiful! I’m so done with snow, but this is something I would love to do!!

Misty - April 15, 2013 - 5:17 am

These are wonderful! I am so glad they loved it..we get a lot of snow where we live and I do sometimes look out and think that there are children who haven’t seen it. That makes it a little easier to take my boys out lol…I am not a huge fan of the cold 🙂

Ashley - April 15, 2013 - 8:53 am

What a fun trip! Your kids look like they are just loving the snow! I think that is a great age to take them. We took my son when he was two and he hated the cold. That is a pretty great tubing hill- love the perspective and lines on that one!

How awesome! I’m glad they enjoyed their first trip to the snow. 🙂

Garage Light | Project 12 Portraits

My post for this month’s blog circle is a bit short on images – it has been a crazy month! Getting a house ready to show and sell is not easy with these two guys on the loose, that’s for sure. Luckily, Grandma and Grandpa have been helping out! This week’s challenge was to utilize garage light. These photos were taken in their Grandpa’s garage, that’s where we found this cool piece of wood to use for a makeshift backdrop. I was inspired by my friend Allison Jacob’s tutorial on using garage light. These were side lit and taken with my 5D Classic and 40mm pancake lens (my go-to travel combination!).
Visit the blog of Williamsonville, New York photographer Melissa Deakin to see how she utilized garage light in her portraits – she does gorgeous work!

More Spring Minisessions! | San Juan Capistrano Children’s Photographer

Here are the last of my spring minisessions. They were so much fun, each and every one of the kids were a pleasure to photograph. I love minis because even though the location is the same, I love seeing the different personalities of the kids shine through. I especially loved shooting brothers and sisters together, it’s clear to me how much they love each other – I hope you see it in the photographs!
